ALEXIS MASON

As an artist, my work reflects how I interpret and connect with the world around me. Each piece is informed from my immediate environment, experiences and passions, shaped by the quiet, often unnoticed connections that bind us to the natural world.

My journey began with a focus on ceramic tableware, which laid a strong foundation in understanding form and function. While tableware has been central to my practice, I am eager to, and have been attempting explore broader artistic expressions through vessels and sculptural forms.

At the beginning of 2024 I was fortunate enough to participate in an artist residency program in India where I was able to explore and refine new techniques away from the rigidity and expectation of university learning. This experience had a huge impact on the way that my current practice looks. It was a pivotal point my artistic journey. I became fascinated by the textures, shapes, and colours of nature. My creativity lies in integrating organic forms and natural elements into my work. For me, clay serves as a canvas where my artistic aspirations unfold, allowing me to translate the awe I have for the beauty of the environment into functional and expressive pieces.

My creative process is intuitive and fluid, much like the act of shaping clay itself. This approach mirrors my belief in animism—the idea that all things, whether objects, places, or creatures, possess a unique spiritual essence. I have been deeply influenced by artists such as Abid Javed, Jonathan Yamakami, and JamFactory’s own Kerryn Levy. Their ability to draw inspiration from the natural world and infuse their work with organic authenticity resonates with me. I aspire to encapsulate this visual interpretation of connection to nature, to create work that captures the transformative energies and patterns found in the environment.

My art is a journey into the world where the tangible and intangible meet.
